Did you know? One of three adults in the Philippines is obese and this trend has been increasing over time.
Nearly half of the provinces and cities have estimates of obesity in young adults ranging from 0% to 4% which suggests that majority of the provinces have prevalence rate lower than the national estimate (which is 4.5% of the total young adult population).
A high prevelance of young adult obesity occurs across the country, but most obese young adults can be found in Luzon. According to the National Nutrition Survey (NNS) conducted by the Food, Nutrition and Research Institute (FRNI).
Causes of Obesity of the Philippines
- A lack of physical exercise
- Cultural belief in fatter children being healthier and cuter
- Social misunderstandings around obesity being "genetic" and beyond individual control
- School or work pressure to perform sedentary tasks rather than pursue physical activities
- An increasing reliance on junk food rather than healthy options for nutrition
- Using unhealthy food for comfort
The Pacific is the most overweight subregion in the world with an estimated number of 59% of adults being overweight and 20% being obese. Economic growth made food increasingly available at lower prices and with lower Nutrient Density while being high in fat and sugar.
The total overweight and obese people in Asia and Pacific region combined is equivalent to about 1 billion people. The obesity and overweight result in direct costs that amount to 8.9% of health expenditure and an estimate of of as high as 3.465 of health care expenditure in the region.
