Printing is basically reproduction of texts and images, creating content on a piece of paper using ink in a device called printer.
That definition is changing as the printing industry took a step notch higher by way of taking in 3D technology. In the Philippines, the doors for 3D Printing has been officially opened as INPHISA IT Programming Services and Grow Creatives Event held the first ever Philippine 3DPC Exhibition.
Enthusiasts and 3D Printing experts gathered at the Open Space Harbour Square CCP Complex last June 29 to 30, for two days of sharing multilevel, informative 3D experiences and a 3D Model Contest Display.
The event held a simultaneous display of 3D models, booths of different 3D printing companies and informative talks that tackles the endless possibilities and future of the 3D Printing world.
Aspire for 3Dprenuers: 3D Business Support Promotion of Investment was deliberated by Ms. Jenifer Devera, President of Inphisa IT Programming Services; followed by Welcoming Remarks of Atty. Ted Pascua, Deputy Director General of Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines.
Mr. Richard Arthuro Olivarez of Fennec3D casually talked about the latest industrial revolution effect of the 3D printing. He even interviewed some of the audience who are inclined into 3D printing – some do it for art, others have passion for the technology behind this advancement. I learned that CNN, computer numerically controlled machines are the roots in this technology and that new and expensive tech such as type or parts of a machine, when needed replacement used to take a lot of time as materials are transported and imported via ships, etc., but through 3D printing, one might be able to use a prototype to temporarily replace that part so the production of that machine will not be delayed while waiting, or maybe permanently replaced the damaged part with 3D printed part, but then again, these depends on the materials of the original parts.
Yours truly was actually intrigued about this kind of printing – this might be the missing key for the spherical homes I’ve been projecting in my mind – a house that floats during flood and rolls in place during earthquake.
One of my huge concern about 3D printing however is its carbon print. We already know that some kinds of plastic needs 400 years or more to disintegrate. My concern was addressed by Engr. Arnaldo Valino of Adamson University in his talk about Key to Competitiveness in 3D Printing Innovation. I learned that finished products can melt down and be used again.
A.Binza 3D Industries
One of the companies I encountered in the event was the A. Binza 3D Industries. Headed by Engr. Aaron Binza, the company provides designing services for mechanical engineering projects, and other minor architectural lay-outs using 3D printing. They can also provide designs and concepts open for client’s product developments.
Fennec3D
Fennec3D provides 3d printing and different kinds of filaments to be used as ‘ink’ for the 3d printer. What I like about Fennec3D is, aside from providing filaments and the opportunity to make, build and play the printouts is the fact that even the packaging has been really thought off. Made from 70% recycled materials yet sturdy and beautiful, both box and reels.
Different Kinds of Filaments:
ABS – ABS stands for Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene Polymer. For useable prototypes that requires heat and UV resistance and can withstand wear and tear, best suited for students and engineering purposes.
HIPS – HIPS is for High-Impact Polystyrene Polymer. For prints that requires high-impact resistance, or for dissolvable support material for ABS prints.
TPU – Thermoplastic polyurethane is TPU has elasticity, transparency, and resistance to grease, oil, and abrasion.
PP – PP is for Polypropylene Filaments. More flexible than other filaments and has lower density that water with colours like transparent, translucent, metallic and pearled.
The event has several participating educational institutions and organizations including Mapua University, Adamson University, Timo3D Lab and Technological University of the Philippines.
I get to play with a 3D print puzzle at Timo3DLab booth. Timothy Chu, head of Timo3DLab started his 3d company just for fun and it ended up to be something even bigger. The future is bright as 3D printing production has endless possibilities and opportunities.
Hopefully, this event will be a staple annual affair that’ll have the Philippines in the map of 3D technology advancement.
